Virus Prevention

Short of disconnecting your computer from the Internet there is no 100% guaranteed means of preventing viruses or spyware infections. However, you can minimize your exposure by following a few simple steps:

  • Maintain a good antivirus/antispyware program – current and updated
  • Ensure you firewall is on at all times - the Windows firewall in Windows 7 and 8 is sufficient (but other 3rd party ones are better) but at the cost of being very interactive (meaning they ask you a lot of questions).
  • Maintain current Windows and other program updates
  • Use common sense and assume someone is always trying to break into your system and/or take advantage of you.
  • If it looks too good to be true, it is – guaranteed.
  • Avoid clicking on links in e-mails, even from friends. If you want to go to that site, always type the address into the address bar of your web browser.
  • Windows XP and earlier – these operating systems are retired and no longer safe to use.
